Refused to complete Direct Debit form in PayPal’s favor
I commute between the UK and Spain, and when I lent a family member some money we agreed that it would be repayed in installments. We decided to use PayPal’s personal transfer scheme, highly promoted as charge free and trouble free.
The first instalment was paid, and when I wanted it transfered to my Spanish bank account I was told this was not possible without opening a Spanish PayPal account in addition to my UK PayPal account. I went to the Spanish website and filled in a new email address and password, only to be transferred back to my UK PayPal account; my attempts to fill in the Spanish address were all blocked.
It took several phone calls, culminating in an hour of trying to unravel the problem with a support member in the Phillipines in order to open the Spanish PayPal account.
I then tried to transfer less than £1000 from the UK “charge free” personal account to the Spanish “charge free” personal account, only to have PayPal demand £39 to make this transfer.
My UK bank will transfer up to 50000 Euros for £8!
I had enough of PayPal by this time and decided to transfer all the £996 in the UK account to my UK bank and close the account, only to be informed that I could only draw up to £500 of my own money per month because my UK bank account was not ‘verified’ – although I’ve been paying through PayPal for goods purchased with this account for years.
So, how to get ‘verified’ in order to get my own money back and close the PayPal account? Here is the denouement-
In order to get my money back and close this account, PayPal demands that I complete an OPEN Direct Debit form in their favor!
Well, I would not complete an open Direct Debit form to my own mother.
On checking on the internet, I find innumerable complaints from PayPal account holders of PayPal taking unauthorised amounts out of their bank accounts via this open Direct Debit form.
So my complaint is: I have no debts, or any financial problems relating to my bank accounts, or to PayPal, or to any business with which I have had dealings; I wish to withdraw all the money I have in the PayPal account and close that account, and PayPal is virtually demanding that I write a blank cheque in their favour before they will transfer the money.
I want to withdraw my own money from PayPal and close my PayPal account. Oh, by the way, their support staff are insisting that this is European Law- It is not.
