PayPal SmartConnect scam as PayPal = nightmare

I have never wanted to create a PayPal account, but many on-line sellers are requiring it now (won’t even accept a “guest” PayPal payment) and friends assured me how safe it is.

Well, the PayPal link from eBay puts you directly into PayPal “SmartConnect”, which is a sham cover for GE Capital Bank credit card with a 26.99% interest rate. This is made as your “default” setting on PayPal, and all on-line transactions automatically go to this.

Once I discovered what happened, the nightmare begins of the “its not us, its them” carousel. PayPal says its not their account and they can’t do anything about it, and GE says they can’t do anything without a PayPal access number, nothing but website and phone run-arounds – no real way to contact anyone to do anything about this.

If you do finally get a person to talk to, it is a call center in India, the Philippines, etc. all saying it is the other agency’s problem.

In the meantime, this is all on your credit report.

DO NOT apply for PayPal, at least through eBay, as it is rigged to put you into SmartConnect (there was no disclaimer or anything when you click the link – it just goes straight to “You are approved!”, even though the link says “Create PayPal account”.)
