PayPal limited our account during a sale!
My company handles a proprietary line of apparel and related accessories for a Sporting Organization who has about 270 offices throughout the USA & Canada. Along with this the organization also maintains a membership list of over a million people.
In addition to the apparel site we own and operate for them, we thought that we would experiment with a sale outside of the parameters of the estore. We would do this by developing a single item special targeting the 270 offices, and my techie said this could easily be done via PayPal.
So, we developed a special low priced tee and set up an account w/ PayPal. Then we did a broadcast email to the 270 offices, announcing a 10 day window for this special sale. And that’s when the fight started!
Our idea worked, and the offices started ordering tees from us. 50 here, 100 there, 200 there, 25 then 400 then BOOM … Paypal shut us down! Our special coincided w/ our clients convention in Las Vegas beginning Easter Weekend. Have you ever had a line of people at your booth trying to order product but you can’t place it because your “partner” (in this case PayPal) has shut you down?!
No phone number, just an email … like I walk around with a PDA tied to my forehead or something! On a weekend! It’s been 2 weeks and I’m still waiting for “Mr. Paypal” to call me back. Apparently they do not like telephones. This entire process has not only cost me money in lost sales but the stress of it all, the frustration and of course they now have about $15,000.00 of my money tied up and it’s going to stay tied up until one of their “supervisors” gets around to calling me back and explaining why they are so UN-business friendly!
Gee, just think … this was the precursor to doing a broadcast email to a million people! I only had to straighten up about a 100 orders with this first experience… hand write labels, re-invoice customers on my own card system … totally redo, re-enter all of the orders because of Paypals horrible bumbling. In addition to having to hassle my customers, at this point their orders will not arrive on time either.
Thanks “Mr. Paypal” for making me and my company look terrific… I’ll get over the black eye soon enough.
