PayPal Holding Funds For Cancelled Transaction
I decided to use Paypal to buy some airline tickets, which I was purchasing through an online travel agaent. During the transaction, after leaving the Paypal screen and returning to the travel agents site, I received a message saying that the agent couldn’t confirm the ticket availability. So the transaction was cancelled.
A subsequent email from the agent confirmed that the seats were actually available. The agent said that I could contact them to pay for the tickets, because they do not retain payment details for “failed transactions”.
The following day I checked my credit card account to discover that the amount for the Paypal transaction was still debited from my credit card. When I checked my Paypal account, it was showing the transaction as cancelled.
So I contacted my bank who advised that the amount was still being held for Paypal, and that the hold would not expire for eight days. Furthermore, if I tried to put the transaction through again to secure the tickets at the current price, I would overdraw my credit card account and be charged overdraft fees.
Over the next 48 hours I rang Paypal 3 times and my bank twice to try and get the hold lifted, with no success. Paypal said they had voided the transaction, but my bank says the funds are being held for paypal. So I cant use my credit card and the travel agent cannot guarantee the flights, in fact they have cancelled my booking.
It looks like I will have to wait seven more days for the funds to be credited back to me. This will be the last time I use Paypal for anything like this!
