Almost lost money thanks to PayPal 45 day dispute policy

I gave an Ebay seller as much time as I could to deliver my item, as PayPal states they allow 45 days to file for a dispute.

The item never arrived, so I tried to file a dispute. However, PayPal said it was too late despite the fact that it was the 45th day, not PAST the 45th day, when I tried to file it. So I contacted American Express who promptly refunded.

The experience left me with negative opinion of PayPal.

    Good thinking DK.

Many people do not realize that PayPal does not actually have the last word when it comes to this policy of theirs. The whole “allowable number of days to submit a dispute” (which currently happens to be limited to 45) is easily bypassed, provided a credit or bank card was used to fund the purchase. Had you actually used existing funds directly from your PayPal account, PayPal would have had the last word and you would have been yet another victim of their user agreement.

So if you really want “buyer protection”, use a credit card to make purchases and only send payments funded directly from your PayPal account to people you know and trust.
