I ended up paying the buyer to take the item!

I recently sold some items through Ebay.  Excited at the thought of having our first child, I was eager to clear out the spare room and also make some extra £ for all the new baby things we are going to need.

One buyer bought 2 items from me on 1st September. While getting the items to weigh & combine postage costs, I accidentally dropped one, (a drinking game) one of the shot glasses inside cracked. My fault completely. I contacted the buyer straight away advising what had happened, I wasnt sure whether they would prefer to cancel the complete order, cancel that one item, or if they would still take it and substitute another glass in.

The buyer got back to me and said she would leave that item, but still take the other one, she then sent through the full payment (2nd September). I immediately refunded the payment for the unwanted item and the postage cost for it. And proceeded to send her parcel.

On 6th September, I received positive feedback from the buyer to say it was great.

On 8th September I received an email from Paypal saying the buyer is disputing the full charge! I gave them all of the details, transaction id’s, and advised re the positive feedback. They then asked for proof of the item being sent.

I forwarded paypal the confirmation email I received, having bought and printed the postage online, and also forwarded a copy of the feedback I’d received from her.

I have now been told today that as I did not send it recorded delivery I do not have a leg to stand on. They cannot take the positive feedback into account, as its not in their terms & conditions.

The buyer now has the item, a full refund of her original payment, additionally she gets to keep the refund which I sent to her on the 2nd Sept. I as the seller have no item, have lost the full payment, have lost the refunded payment, have lost the postage costs, and I’m expected to now pay Ebay final selling costs. And to add insult to injury I am unable to dispute the refunded payment, as they can’t have 2 disputes on the 1 case!

To make it even harder for us honest people out there, you can no longer leave negative feedback. Therefore I have no way of alerting other sellers to the behaviour of this thieving individual!

After today I won’t be using Ebay or Paypal ever again and I will be telling as many people as I can to steer clear. There are too many dishonest people out there now, and Ebay & Paypal are encouraging them!
