Damaged item dispute

A buyer bought my laptop outside of ebay and paid by paypal. The item was posted, but 1 week later the buyer wanted a refund as he apparently had not received the item. Luckily it was a tracked postage, and so I sent him the tracking details. He never replied back. 1 month later he came back and said the screen was damaged, and again is demanding a refund!

I really want to fight this claim even if it means a long dispute, but i know a buyer always has an upper hand. Whats the worse that can happen?

I do not care about my Paypal account, but is there a risk they can send me to debt collectors or screw my credit history? If Paypal decides in the favour of the buyer can I take them to a small claims court?

Any advice would be much appreciated?

Sounds like you are dealing with someone who is having “buyers remorse”.

The good thing is that you did not sell it to him from an ebay auction, PayPal is more likely to rule in your favor because of this simple fact. When you sell something via’ ebay, paypal is obligated to provide the buyer with “more than the usual” protection (you know, the whole ebay “buyer protection” thing). If you have tracking info to provide to PayPal you are probably in the clear. They will probably rule in your favor and tell the buyer that they would have helped them out if they would have purchased the item on ebay.

As far as sending you to collections, if it goes the other way and PayPal finds in the buyers favor, they will send you to collections to get the money back. And I would assume this collection attempt would appear on your credit report as any other would.
