Craigslist buyer limits new PayPal account
I posted an ad on craigslist selling a few items, and the person who responed to my ad was from New Jersey. When he emailed me about my items I explained to him where I was from and that he was in the wrong section of craigslist. He said it didn’t matter that he really wanted the items. He then asked if I used Paypal, to which I said no and he explained to me how to set up an account.
After all that was done he sent the payment to my Paypal account, no problem, and I went to my local Post office and sent the items express mail so that he would get the package the next day.
After he sent the funds to my Paypal account, I transfered the funds to my bank account. He then called me at 5 am this morning asking me where the package was. Being Sunday the post office is closed, but he has the tracking number and all shipping information.
So then he gets really pissy with me and hangs up. I get an email about an hour later from Paypal stating that a claim has been submitted, and now the Paypal account is locked and I can’t do anything with it. I go to log onto the account to dispute it and my Paypal account now has a negative balance of what the buyer sent me.
Now I don’t know what to do. Did that money go back to him and I have to pay the negative balance and how do I go about getting my stuff back I sent?

RM, sounds fishy. The buyer has you set up a PayPal account, and knowing the post office is closed on Sunday he still gets upset about the package not being there? You supposed to be Santa Clause or something, and just drop the package down his chimney?
It sounds to me like he set you up. Make sure you call PayPal and explain the situation to them. You will need to provide them with the same tracking information you sent the buyer. Your account is in the negative because PayPal apparently expects to get the money back from you, since you withdrew it from your account.
Three things that happened here likely tripped PayPal’s system to flag your account and put in in a limited status-
Firstly, the account was brand new. Secondly, you immediately withdrew the money after the purchase was made. So when the guy filed a dispute PayPal instantly placed the blame on your end, since you have no history of successful transactions and your very first one has a dispute against it.
You need to contact PayPal first and foremost. Be persistent, don’t get upset with the representatives (you will want to get upset, I promise (They will likely try to make you feel like some kind of criminal). Explain clearly what happened, get to a supervisor if the representative can’t help you.
Next, try to get in contact with the person who actually made the decision to limit your account. This is not easy, and will likely have to be done via’ email. Be persistent, explain clearly and calmly what happened.
Please update with your progress!
